Duration: 6'00"

I. Ethereal Mud Ponderings

This movement is an exploration of the tuba as a whimsical instrument, historically associated with comedy in animations (alongside the trombone). The music, while not strictly tonal, invites contemplation with moments of silliness, as indicated by playful instructions for the performer such as "look surprised" or "look serious." At the same time, there are moments of reflection on the tuba's sound that balance out the seriousness and silliness of this movement.

II. Grimy Depths

The tempo marking for the beginning of this movement is aptly labeled "heavy like a dump truck." Tuba is the lowest instrument of the standard brass family and as such, in the traditional wind ensemble instrumental balancing, is refered to as the base sound of the wind ensemble sound "pyramid". This movement explores the entirety of the tuba's range, from the very lowest notes to some of the highest notes possible on the instrument. Whereas the first movement explores some of the lighter qualities of the tuba, this movement primarily focuses on the weight of sound that the tuba can create.
